Man, oh, man, the YES program is really hopping! Here are some recent highlights:
The group based in Mander Playground is working with the East Park Revitalization Alliance to maintain a garden and beautify the grounds surrounding the historical Woodford mansion. Traci Snyder reports, “The enthusiasm for this project is just extraordinary.”
Over at Papa Playground, the YES team there is participating in weekly yoga sessions courtesy of Yoga Unites. Although teenagers and yoga may seem like an unlikely pairing, instructor Jennifer Schelter says it’s been a big hit: “The kids have done an amazing job of not only doing yoga but dialoguing through journaling and group-share of who they are and what they learn. Their self-discovery has been wonderful.”
Last Friday, all six YES groups came together for Career Day. Two guest speakers, Carlton Williams (of the City’s Streets Dept.) and Nate Johnson (of Roofscapes, Inc.), got the teens thinking about the array of “green-collared” jobs in Philadelphia and beyond. The participants also enjoyed tours of the Horticultural Center, learned about trees, and played a game show called “What’s My Green Job?” Special thanks to Lori, Julian, Gus, and everyone at the Hort. Center for their hospitality.
