We all have a green space that we love—be it a public park, a corporate courtyard, or even the wildflower bed in the median of the highway. The Community Greening Award is a way for PHS to recognize greening efforts throughout the region that beautify communities, brighten lives, and help the environment. Recipients of the award have included individuals and groups who maintain main streets, public parks, traffic islands, train stations, churches, schoolyards, libraries, or businesses.
Green spaces and efforts to preserve them come in many forms, so PHS is considering all possibilities. For example, municipalities that have led tree planting initiatives, combated storm-water runoff, or pursued other ecologically beneficial projects may also apply.
To be considered, a site must be nominated by July 15. You can nominate your green space or one that you admire by submitting the nomination form. Judges will be sent to the nominated sites in July and August and will be looking for plant variety, design, use of space, and horticultural practices. Sites that have been recognized in previous years may be re-evaluated for a maintenance award.
