Join PHS Young Friends on Wednesday, August 15, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm for a tour of the green roof at the PECO building at 2301 Market Street in Philadelphia. Spanning more than 45,000 square feet, the PECO green roof features an observation deck and stunning views of downtown Philadelphia.
The rooftop garden, on the top of an eight-story section of the building, holds growing media of up to eight inches thick, and the vegetative covering reduces rainwater runoff by up to 70%, and also insulates the building. It is the largest green roof on an existing building in Philadelphia. The planting design for the PECO roof contrasts low-growing, non-native succulents over the extensive area with native perennials and ornamental grasses in the planting beds surrounding the viewing deck.
Tour participants must be at least 18 years of age. Click here to register, or contact Allison Burkhart for more information. The cost is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers (free for PHS members with a Young Friends add-on).
In December 2008, PECO teamed up with PHS to install a green roof at its headquarters building in Philadelphia.
The rooftop garden, on the top of an eight-story section of the building at 2013 Market Street, holds growing media of up to eight inches thick, and the vegetative covering reduces rainwater runoff by up to 70%, and also insulates the building.

The PECO Green Roof is the largest retrofitted green roof on an existing building in Philadelphia, and it offers amazing views of the Philadelphia skyline. Imagine 45,000 square feet of vegetative space, including three inches of soil and layers of native grasses and plants that absorb and detain rain water. Now imagine that space several stories in the air, on a Center City rooftop.
In 2009, PECO completed the largest green roof ever installed on an existing urban building in Pennsylvania. The “living roof” prevents rainstorm runoff, regulates the temperature of the building (decreasing reliance for heating and air conditioning), creates habitats, and provides cleaner air. Best of all, it’s available for all to see.
PECO has again teamed up with PHS to provide tours of the green roof. Tours will occur on the third Tuesday of every month at 5 pm starting in April and ending in October. The first tour will be on Tuesday, April 19. The fee is $5 for PHS members and $10 for nonmembers. Space is limited and pre-registration at least two business days before the tour is required. Tour participants must be at least 18 years of age.
Visit the PHS website for more information on the PECO project and click here for more tour information.
For those of you who haven’t had the chance to take a tour of the green roof at PECO’s downtown headquarters, you are in luck. PHS’s Margaret Funderburg took these photos recently during the fall clean-up, and they show just how beautiful it is up there. Tours of the green roof will resume in spring 2011.
Enjoy the slideshow!
If you haven’t been to the PECO green roof yet, don’t let the opportunity pass you by. There are only three more tours in 2010, and they tend to sell out. The dates are August 17, September 21, and October 19—all Tuesdays—and the tours run from 5 to 6 pm. Registration is required, so reserve your spot by emailing email@example.com.
Last month the PHS Young Friends went up to the green roof and had a glorious time. Serena Thaw had her camera ready and took all these amazing shots. You can see more of Serena’s green roof photos at www.serenaphoto.zenfolio.com.
